The former American soldier, politician and President of the Confederate States of America resided in the home from 1877 to 1889.
The home was built by a wealthy Madison County plantation owner in 1848.  The name Beauvoir comes from the homes second owner, Sarah Dorsey.  Upon her first view of the Mississippi Sound, she said "Oh my, what a beautiful view".  From that point on the home was called Beauvoir (French for a beautiful view).
In 1903, the home was sold to the Mississippi Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans who presently still own and operate the home.
Today, the property features a Presidential Library and Museum, the Confederate Veterans Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a Gift Shop and the Beauvoir Home.  Beauvoir is open to the public 7 days a week from 9am - 5pm.
Annual events include: Fall Muster and Christmas at Beauvoir.
